Topic:
The relationship of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 to other genocides of the 20th Century.

Genocide:  According to the United Nations definition, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Eligibility: 
Michigan high school students in grades 9-12, and Michigan middle school students, grades 6-8.

Assignment:
The essay should compare and contrast one or more aspects of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey with other genocides in modern history.  Suggested themes may include one or more of the following examples; 

1.Events which precipitated the Armenian Genocide and other genocides.
2.The actions and/or responsibilities of individuals during the Armenian Genocide and other genocides.
3.The response of the U.S. Government toward the Armenian Genocide and other genocides.
4.Official Turkish denial of the Armenian genocide and other genocide deniers.
5.Should the United States officially recognize the Armenian Genocide by voting into law, HR 106 (see www.hr106.com)
6.Should there be land reparations for the Turkish Genocide of the Armenians?

Length: 
Paper must be typed, double spaced, one side only, in a readable 12 point font, minimum 500 words, maximum 1,000 words.  Paper must include a cover page with your name, grade, the name and address of your school, and your instructor’s name.

Instructors to review and submit all essays for consideration to The Armenian Genocide Committee,  c/o 850 S. Old Woodward, Birmingham, MI 48009
April 15, 2009 - winner will be announced -
The judging committee is comprised of members of the Detroit metro Armenian community including educators, former educators, and business leaders.
April 2009 - awards presentation.   Awards will be presented at an 2009 Armenian Genocide Commemoration event (date to be announced).
Instructors will be notified by mail of the winning essays and inform their students.

In addition, each teacher of the student submitting a winning essay
will be given a $100 appreciation award.

All essays submitted become the property of The Armenian Genocide Committee and may be reproduced at their discretion.
